A sample extract from the resource:

Active reading of the sources

  • Don’t jump straight in to answering the questions; take some time to read through the sources properly.
  • Highlight interesting words or phrases.
  • Try to establish exactly what the authors are trying to ‘show you’ by the end of the extract.
  • Ask yourself: What is the tone of the sources? What are the differences between the sources?

Question 1

Choose four statements below which are TRUE …

This is a question where all you need to do is identify explicit information and ideas from the first source text.

Revision strategy: Pick a short extract from a non-fiction text. Read it and write down four clear facts you have learned from it.

Question 2

Using details from both sources, what can you infer about the differences between …

Look at both sources to consider the differences between them based on the specific area identified in the question. The sources will usually have the same theme/idea, but will perhaps have different tones, contrasting perspectives or be subtly opposite in their point of view.

Here’s one possible structure for how you could answer this question:

point (difference) à quote (source A) à comparative adverbial à quote (source B) à explanation of difference

Revision strategy: Practise reading two non-fiction texts on the same theme, e.g. war, sport, life events, etc. Draw up a comparison table to identify the differences between them.
