En España, los alumnos empiezan el instituto a los doce años; este solo dura cuatro años, y culmina con el título de ESO (Educación Secundaria Obligatoria). No hay tantas asignaturas como en Inglaterra. Entre las asignaturas obligatorias están, entre otras, Geografía e Historia, Lengua y Literatura, Matemáticas, ciencias y lenguas extranjeras.
